Birth education tailored to you
Prepare for birth with practical information, a familiar midwife and time to ask the questions that matter to you.
This individual session is for you and your birth partner.
We tailor it to your pregnancy, previous experiences and intended place of birth, including hospital birth and home birth.
What actually happens in a session?
We begin with what you already know, what feels uncertain and what you hope for.
You can bring questions from your hospital appointments or experiences from a previous birth. We work through practical topics together.
There is room to pause, ask questions and spend longer on the subjects that matter most to you.
- How labour may begin and progress, and when to contact your maternity team.
- Comfort measures, movement, breathing and available pain relief.
- What your partner can do, including practical support and helping communicate your preferences.
- Induction, assisted birth and caesarean birth: why they may be recommended and questions you can ask.
- Your preferences for examinations, monitoring, pain relief and the birth environment.
- The first hours with your baby, feeding and planning support at home.
Why prepare your partner too?
Your partner can learn how to offer comfort, notice what helps you, ask useful questions and support feeding and recovery after birth.
Preparing together gives them practical ways to help.
A plan you can use in real life
We help you record your priorities and discuss how they can be supported. We also explore situations where extra care may be recommended and how you can stay involved in decisions.
Useful questions include: What are the benefits and risks? What other options are available? How urgent is this decision? What would happen if we waited?
The session gives you and your partner a shared understanding of your preferences, the choices you may face and the support you will need afterwards.
Timing, length and costs
Sessions are usually booked between 28 and 36 weeks. Private sessions allow up to three hours of appointment time in clinic or at home. A home booking shows three and a half hours because it includes 30 minutes for travel.
Clinic fee: $420.
Home session fee: $480.
An eligible maternity care-plan appointment attracts a $324.50 Medicare rebate, leaving an estimated gap of $95.50 in clinic or $155.50 at home.
Medicare-eligible women under 21 can book bulk-billed clinical birth-planning appointments, which allow two hours and are subject to the relevant Medicare requirements.
You are welcome to book education while receiving pregnancy care elsewhere.
