Postnatal Care

Care for you and your baby after birth

The early weeks bring recovery, feeding and getting to know your baby. Postnatal appointments give you time with Rachel to work through questions and receive practical, individual support.

You can book after a hospital birth, caesarean or home birth, including if you received pregnancy care elsewhere.

What actually happens at your first appointment?

We talk through your birth, any follow-up recommended by your maternity team and how things have been since you came home. The appointment includes care for you as well as your baby.

For you, we can assess recovery, bleeding, pain, relevant observations and wound or perineal healing where appropriate. We discuss sleep, emotional wellbeing, medicines, practical support and any concerns you have been putting off asking about.

For your baby, we can assess feeding, weight and wellbeing, discuss nappies and jaundice, and review relevant discharge information or screening follow-up. We arrange further assessment or referrals when needed.

Every check is explained and based on your needs and consent.

Feeding support in the moment

Where useful, we can observe a feed and help with positioning, attachment, expressing or bottle feeding. We talk about your goals, what is going well and what feels difficult, then agree on practical next steps and follow-up.

Bring your feeding questions even if you are unsure how to describe the problem. You do not need to wait until feeding feels unmanageable to ask for support.

Appointment length and costs

Private initial appointment: 90 minutes.
Private return appointment: 60 minutes.

Home visits allow the same clinical appointment time.

Clinic fee: $190, Home visit fee: $240.

Medicare rebates may apply, with estimated out of pocket fees of $79 for a clinic appointment.

Medicare-eligible women under 21 can access bulk-billed appointments.

What happens at return visits?

We review your recovery and your baby's progress, check whether the previous plan has helped and adjust it together. The focus may change from early feeding and healing to confidence at home, your wellbeing and the next stages of care.

Where appropriate, we can take blood or collect other pathology samples during your appointment, saving a separate collection visit. Some investigations require an external provider and may have separate charges.

Why the first week deserves support

Milk volume often increases in the first few days after birth, while you are also recovering and learning your baby's feeding cues. Early help with feeding and recovery can make this period easier to navigate.

Your own wellbeing matters throughout these weeks. Our appointments complement your maternity team's discharge plan, your GP and maternal and child health services.
